For those aspiring to attain a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Christian Counseling a Master's Degree is the prerequisite. The journey toward a Ph.D. encompasses 60 credit hours beyond the Master's Degree. Enrolled students will receive all 10 elective courses (totaling 30 credit hours) at the onset of their program, streamlining the path to completion. This innovative structure ensures a seamless progression, culminating in the fulfillment of credit hours through the completion of both the prescribed courses and the compelling Doctoral Dissertation.
For several years, We have received requests from students asking the New Jersey Institute of Theology to develop a serious, comprehensive program in Christian Counseling—one that did more than simply provide a few introductory lessons, but instead brought together strong biblical understanding, practical counseling skills, nouthetic/biblical counseling principles, ethical responsibility, counseling methodology, mental-health awareness, crisis response, and real-world ministry application.
We did not want NJIT to introduce another program simply because Christian counseling is popular. I wanted us to develop a program that I could be proud to recommend to pastors, ministers, chaplains, Christian leaders, and those who genuinely feel called to help hurting people. We believe we have finally accomplished that.
The New Jersey Institute of Theology, in conjunction with the National Bible College Association, and Association of Registered Christian Counselors (ARCC) is excited to introduce our new:
PH.D. IN CHRISTIAN COUNSELING + 12-MODULE/WEEK CHRISTIAN COUNSELOR CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
The program is designed to provide advanced academic recognition through the Ph.D. in Christian Counseling while also allowing qualified graduates to receive certification through the Association of Registered Christian Counselors (ARCC), according to the association's membership and enrollment fulfillment.
This is the Christian counseling program many of you have been waiting for.
This Is Much More Than Another Online Course
The certification curriculum is a structured 12-module online Christian counseling program, designed to be completed in approximately 12 weeks, with students normally devoting approximately 5–7 hours per week to study. The program includes lectures, assigned readings, academic articles, Scripture study, case studies, practical exercises, counseling-skills development, quizzes, written work, a final ministry project, and a comprehensive examination.
Purpose and Scope of the Ph.D. in Christian counseling at the New Jersey Institute of Theology
This academic program dedicated to equipping scholars, theologians, and ministry leaders with advanced biblical knowledge, theological depth, and research expertise. This program is designed to foster a commitment to biblical counseling .
Each module builds upon the previous one.
Module 1 — The Identity, Calling, and Scope of the Christian Counselor
You will examine counseling as ministry, the calling and responsibilities of the Christian counselor, competence, accountability, scope of practice, and perhaps one of the most important lessons a counselor can learn—recognizing when a situation is beyond your training and should be referred.
Module 2 — Responsible Biblical and Spiritual Integration
You will learn how to use Scripture, prayer, spiritual disciplines, theological reflection, grace, forgiveness, repentance, reconciliation, hope, and even biblical lament appropriately in counseling—not simply throwing a Bible verse at someone's pain, but learning how to minister God's Word responsibly and compassionately.
Module 3 — Counselor Formation, Self-Awareness, and Sustainable Service
Before we can effectively help other people, we must understand ourselves. This module examines personal history, bias, emotional triggers, countertransference, spiritual pride, burnout, compassion strain, supervision, accountability, and self-care.
Module 4 — The Helping Relationship: Counseling and Communication Skills
This is where students develop practical helping skills: active listening, empathy, questioning, reflection, clarification, summarization, silence, feedback, rapport, and respectful challenge. Research incorporated into the program emphasizes that the quality of the helping relationship itself is an important component of effective counseling.
Module 5 — Ethics, Confidentiality, Boundaries, and Documentation
Students study informed consent, confidentiality and its limitations, ethical boundaries, dual relationships, misconduct prevention, documentation, digital privacy, and responsible record-keeping.
Module 6 — Assessment, Goal Setting, and Conducting the Counseling Session
You will move from theory into the structure of an actual counseling relationship: intake, assessment, collaborative goal setting, care planning, structuring sessions, assigning appropriate action steps, evaluating progress, documenting sessions, and properly concluding the counseling relationship.
Module 7 — Emotional Distress and Mental-Health Awareness
Christian counselors regularly encounter people dealing with depression, anxiety, anger, shame, trauma responses, substance misuse, psychosis, self-harm, and other serious concerns. This module teaches students to recognize warning signs while understanding the critical difference between recognizing a concern and attempting to make a clinical diagnosis.
Module 8 — Marriage, Family, Conflict, and Relationship Counseling
Students explore communication, conflict, trust, forgiveness, family patterns, premarital care, separation, coercive control, abuse, accountability, and safety. Students develop a relationship-enrichment or premarital counseling plan as part of their practical work.
Module 9 — Grief, Loss, Trauma, and Pastoral Care
Students learn principles for helping people through grief, bereavement, sudden death, trauma, lament, crisis stabilization, funeral follow-up, and longer-term pastoral support. Students will actually develop a 90-day grief-care and follow-up plan.
Module 10 — Addiction, Motivation, Recovery, and Spiritual Support
This module addresses substance use, behavioral addictions, denial, shame, motivational interviewing, family enabling, relapse, recovery communities, treatment collaboration, medical risk, and the Church's role in long-term recovery support. The academic material even introduces research-supported motivational interviewing principles for helping people work through ambivalence and develop their own motivation for change.
Module 11 — Crisis Intervention, Suicide Awareness, and Safety Planning
Students learn to recognize crisis warning signs, ask direct safety questions, respond appropriately to imminent danger, understand reporting responsibilities, document crisis situations, develop referral networks, and coordinate emergency intervention rather than attempting to handle dangerous situations alone.
Module 12 — Integration, Evaluation, Supervision, and Continuing Competence
The final module brings everything together. Students integrate biblical care, counseling skills, ethics, risk awareness, referral, documentation, supervision, evaluation, and continuing education into a responsible Christian counseling ministry.
